The Olympic Winter Games is a major international sporting event that occurs once every four years. The first Olympic Winter Games took place in 1924 in Chamonix (FRA).
Figure Skating and Speed Skating were part of the original five Olympic Winter sports although Figure Skating also featured in the 1908 Olympic Games (summer) in London (GBR).
The Olympic Winter Games have evolved since its inception. Sports and disciplines have been added, including Short Track Speed Skating (in 1992) which has earned a permanent spot on the Olympic program.

Wenjing Sui/Cong Han make China proud with gold
China’s Wenjing Sui/Cong Han struck gold on home ice as the Figure Skating competition at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games concluded with the Pairs Free Skating at the Capital Indoor Stadium Saturday. Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov (ROC) were edged by less than one point and took the silver, while teammates Anastasia Mishina/Aleksandr Galliamov (ROC) earned the bronze.
Wenjing Sui/Cong Han (CHN) take lead with record score
2018 Olympic silver medalists Wenjing Sui/Cong Han (CHN) took the lead setting a new record score as the Figure Skating competition continued with the Pairs Short Program at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games at the Capital Indoor Stadium on Friday. Two-time ISU World silver medalists Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov (ROC) are just 0.16 points behind in second place, while 2021 ISU World Champions Anastasia Mishina/Aleksandr Galliamov (ROC) came third. The top three couples set a new personal best score for themselves.
Krol upgrades to gold in 1000m as Dubreuil thanks Verbij for ‘classy move’
After his 1500m silver, Thomas Krol (NED) took another step up to the podium, seizing the Olympic 1000m title in Beijing. The Dutchman finished in 1 minute 7.92s, to keep Laurent Dubreuil (CAN) 0.40s behind. The Canadian landed silver after an act of true selfless sportsmanship by Krol’s long-time friend Kai Verbij (NED), who made way for Dubreuil after the pair ended up level on the final backstretch of their exhilarating race. Håvard Lorentzen (NOR) followed up his 2018 silver with bronze at the Beijing 2022 Olympics.

The traditionalists in long track Speed Skating still look at it with a sense of reluctance, but most Skaters have embraced the new dynamics since the event was added to the World Cup program ten years ago.
