Lausanne / Switzerland

It is with profound regret and sorrow that the ISU learnt of the death of our good friend Mr. Hans Gerschwiler. The five-time Swiss national Champion passed away on September 27, 2017 at the age of 96.

Hans Gerschweiler

Born June 20, 1920 in Winterthur, Switzerland, Mr. Gerschwiler grew up in a skating family. He was crowned European and World Champion in 1947 and the following year he finished second at the 1948 Olympic Winter Games in Saint Moritz, Switzerland. He is one of only three Swiss Olympic medallists in Figure Skating, Georges Gautschi won bronze in 1924 and Stéphane Lambiel silver in 2006.

Following his successful competitive career Mr. Gerschwiler turned professional in 1948. Later in life he moved to Canada and USA to follow the path of this uncle Jacques Gerschwiler, to become a coach.

Mr. Gerschwiler is survived by his wife, Nancy Gilchrist.

The ISU pays tribute to Hans Gerschwiler and will remember him with affection.
