The Junior World Cup has successfully completed its second season after its inauguration in 2008. The 2009/2010 Junior World Cup Speed skating circuit concluded this week with a final competition in Berlin on March 5 and 6: A new Junior World Record in Team Pursuit was set by the Dutch men this week. They won in a Junior WR time of 3:54.40.
The circuit is comprised of a series of competitions running between November and March. Skaters could attend an ISU Junior World Cup Speed Skating event scheduled in their region in third week of November, either in Groningen (NED), Harbin (CHN) or Calgary (CAN). In the second half of January two events were held back to back in Italy in Collalbo and Baselga di Piné before the March final in Berlin (GER).
Ladies
In the ladies Jekaterina Ajdova (KAZ) had an outstanding season winning both the 500m and 1000m cup. Dutch skater Lotte van Beek (NED) also showed her strength winning the 1500m cup and taking second place on the 500m. Her team mate Irene Schouten won the 3000m cup-
Ida Njåtun (NOR) finished second overall on the 1000m as well as third on the 1500m and 3000m. Yevgenia Dmitrieva (RUS) finished second overall on the 1500m. Germany took a podium spot with Jennifer Bay’s second place in the 3000m distance. Janine Smit (NED) completed the podium of the 500m and 1000m distance by taking third place in both overall.
The Dutch ladies (Lotte van Beek, Janine Smit and Irene Schouten) won the Team Pursuit ahead of Russia and Italy.
Men
Kazakhstan also dominated the men’s 500m and 1000m with Aleksey Bondarchuk (KAZ) winning the cup in both distances. Artur Nogal (POL) took second place on the 500m and third on the 1000m. On these distances noteworthy was the performance of Russian Andrey Panov (third on the 500m) and Richard MacLennan of Canada (second on the 1000m).
Kjetil Stiansen (NOR) won the 1500m ahead of two Dutch skaters Thomas van Beek and Maurice Vriend (NED). Frank Hermans (NED) won the long distance cup (3000/5000m) ahead of Noway’s Sverre Lunde Pedersen and Håvard Holmefjord Lorentzen.
In the Team Pursuit, the Norwegians set a junior world record of 3:54.68 at the Cup Final in Berlin, but that record was improved by the Dutch men in the following pair. Maurice Vriend, Lucas van Alphen and Frank Hermans set the new JWR and won the Team Pursuit cup with 3:54.40; Norway and Russia took second and third respectively.
Next week, the Junior World Championships will take place in Moscow, Russia on March 12-14, 2010.
