Lausanne has a distinguished history of hosting international Figure Skating, having staged the European Championships in 1992 and 2002 and the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in 1997. The 2027 edition will mark the return of the European Championships to the city for the first time in 25 years.
For the ISU, the occasion carries particular significance. Lausanne is both the Olympic Capital and the home of the ISU, making the Championships an opportunity to reconnect Figure Skating with the Olympic community, Swiss audiences and fans from across Europe, while celebrating more than 130 years of skating history.
ISU President, Jae Youl Kim, said: “Bringing the ISU Figure Skating European Championships back to Lausanne after 25 years is truly special. Lausanne is a city with sport at its heart. It is home to the Olympic Movement and the ISU, making it a particularly meaningful place to host one of the most prestigious Figure Skating events of the season. We look forward to welcoming Europe’s finest skaters to this remarkable city for a week of outstanding performances, unforgettable moments and an electrifying atmosphere that will inspire athletes and fans alike.”
The return of the European Championships will bring athletes, teams, officials and fans from across the continent to Lausanne, strengthening the city's longstanding connection with international sport and offering Swiss audiences the opportunity to experience Europe’s best skaters competing on home ground.
Emilie Moeschler, Municipal Councillor, Director of Sports and Social Cohesion, City of Lausanne said: “The City of Lausanne is delighted to once again welcome a major sporting event that combines world-class competition with a festive, inclusive atmosphere. Hosting these Championships for the third time is a great source of pride, particularly in the magnificent setting of the Vaudoise aréna. Lausanne continues to strengthen its reputation as a host city for major international sporting events.”
With 100 days to go, preparations are well underway to bring the Championships to life both inside and beyond the arena. Around 400 volunteers are expected to play a key role in delivering the event, while the educational initiative “La Glace c’est Classe” (“Ice is Cool”) will introduce more than 6,000 schoolchildren to Figure Skating through skating lessons and the opportunity to experience the sport live in Lausanne in January.
Diana Barbacci, President of the Organizing Committee and Swiss Ice Skating said: “At the end of January 2027, Lausanne will be the place to be for Figure Skating fans and those who enjoy sporting events and festive experiences more broadly. The Organising Committee looks forward to bringing this dynamic and exciting event to life, combining outstanding sporting performances with an immersive experience for spectators. We are laying the foundations for Lausanne’s present and future as a leading host city for Figure Skating.”
With a passionate fan base, an enthusiastic local skating community and a city deeply rooted in the Olympic Movement, Lausanne 2027 is shaping up to be a landmark event for Figure Skating in Switzerland.
