The stars that impress us at the World and Olympic stage today all have started out at the junior level and began their journey with the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating series. One of them is Vincent Zhou (USA), who claimed the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships title in 2017. The next season, he made the Olympic team and finished a respectable 6th in PyeongChang. In 2019, Zhou claimed the bronze medal at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships and the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships.

Aleksandra Boikova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii were both Single Skaters when they teamed up end of 2015. It took them less than a year to get assigned to their first ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating event in Saransk (RUS) in fall 2016. The Pair from St. Petersburg that is coached by Artur Minchuk and the legendary Tamara Moskvina claimed the silver medal at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in 2017.

The ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series 2020/21 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Nevertheless, in the spirit of the #UpAgain campaign, Junior Skaters will take centre stage over the course of the next few weeks. The ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2017, 2018 and 2019 will be streamed on the Skating ISU YouTube Channel, starting on September 5, 2020 at 12:00 noon (CEST). Ted Barton will also be conducting exclusive interviews with some of the athletes who competed during the Championships and will be reviewing the programs of the top three contestants of each event.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced everyone to try new and different things. Skaters trained online and at home, choreographers were building programs using video conference techniques. 2015 ISU World Figure Skating Champion Elizaveta Tuktamysheva (RUS) and her choreographer Juri Smekalov, a dancer and choreographer from the world famous Mariinski Theater in St. Petersburg, took it a step further and built a new program live on Instagram in several sessions for everyone to watch, follow and participate.

While training on ice was put on hold everywhere in the world, it doesn’t mean that the skaters were sitting back and taking a break. Training continued, but just in a different way and the ”Keep Training!” series for Figure Skating and Synchronized Skating launched by the ISU in collaboration with the ISU Centers of Excellence in April turned out to be a huge success. Thousands of viewers followed the live training sessions with well-known skaters such as Stéphane Lambiel (SUI), Aljona Savchenko (GER), Ondrej Hotarek (ITA), Jeremy Abbott (USA) and other experts, or watched the videos later. Speed Skating and Short Track Speed Skating also offer online training sessions.

Consideration that some ice rinks are re-opening and Skaters are hitting the ice again, with lockdown measures slowly easing down, the ISU CoEKeep Training Series presents an online training weekend on June 5 and June 7, 2020, which will be the last Keep Training! Figure Skating Series for the foreseeable future. Don't miss them!
