Alena Kostornaia led the way for the Russian “triple A team” in the Ladies Short Program at the ISU European Figure Skating Championships in Graz (AUT) on Friday and was the only Lady to go for a triple Axel. Anna Shcherbakova and Alexandra Trusova follow in second and third place.

Dmitri Aliev of Russia stormed to gold with 26 points to spare to take the first European title for a Russian man since 2012. 16-year-old Artur Danielian, the youngest competitor in the Men’s event, made it one-two for Russia by clinching silver. Morisi Kvitelashvili earned the bronze, becoming the first Georgian man to win a medal at the European Figure Skating Championships.

Olympic silver medalists Gabriella Papadakis/Guillaume Cizeron of France edged Russia’s  Victoria Sinitsina/Nikita Katsalapov by just 0.05 points in the Rhythm Dance as the ISU European Figure Skating Championships continued in Graz (AUT) on Thursday. Italians Charlene Guignard/ Marco Fabbri (ITA) are currently ranked third.

Michal Brezina of the Czech Republic, the most experienced skater in the field, clinched a narrow lead in the Men’s Short Program over Russia’s Dmitri Aliev as the ISU European Figure Skating Championships opened in Graz (AUT) on Wednesday. Youngster Artur Danielian of Russia came third in the first segment of the event.

Europe’s top Figure Skaters are getting ready for the ISU European Figure Skating Championships 2020 in Graz, Austria (January 21-27). 165 skaters from 33 ISU members have been entered for this 113th edition of the ISU European Championships: 35 Men, 38 Ladies, 19 Pair Skating couples and 27 Ice Dance couples. Only in the Ice Dance event five-time and reigning ISU European Figure Skating Champions Gabriella Papadakis/Guillaume Cizeron (FRA) are back and hope to defend their title. There will be different champions in the Men’s, Ladies and Pairs categories.

The Biellmann spin is one of the best known spins in figure skating – and the only one named after a person. It is an upright spin, a variation of the layback spin. While spinning on one leg, the skater pulls the other leg up and holds the foot extended over and behind the head. By ISU rules, the spin is a Biellmann, when "the level of the boot passes the head so that the boot is above and behind or over the head”. There are various degrees of extension of the free leg.
