In a tight race led most of the way by Olympic gold medallist Lim Hyo Jun (KOR), Quebec native Hamelin bided his time before making his move with two laps to go to win his 10th ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships gold and 33rd medal overall.

Fellow Canadian, Samuel Girard, was penalized in the A Final for impeding another skater, while Hungary’s Shaolin Sandor Liu stayed was in medal contention for much of the race until a late push by Semen Elistratov moved the Russian into the bronze position.

Defending champion Seo Yi Ra (KOR) missed out on the A Final after coming in fourth in his semi-final heat and finished second in the B Final behind China’s Ren Ziwei.
