Heerenveen will host the 50th ISU World Sprint Speed Skating Championships on February 23-24. Reigning World Sprint Champion Håvard Lorentzen (NOR) hopes to keep his crown in Heerenveen while Jorien ter Mors(NED) had to skip the current season due to knee surgery leaving the title up for grabs.

Finnish skater Viveca Lindfors has been on the rise this season and topped it off by taking the bronze medal at the ISU European Figure Skating Championships in Minsk (BLR) in January. It was the first ISU Championship medal for a Finnish figure skater since Kiira Korpi had won silver at Europeans in 2012.

Femke Kok (NED) and Jaewon Chung (KOR) have won the ladies' and men's ISU World Junior Allround Speed Skating titles in Baselga di Piné (ITA). Both Kok and Chung also won the single distance title in the 1500m, thus becoming the most decorated youngsters at the ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships 2019. The Netherlands led the medal table in the ladies events and the Republic of Korea in the men's.

Coming off a 10-month break from training and competing, Madison Chock/Evan Bates (USA) upset the favorites to dance off with the gold medal at the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 2019 in Anaheim (USA) on Sunday. Canada’s Kaitlyn Weaver/Andrew Poje, who had sat out the Grand Prix series as well, earned the silver medal while fellow Canadians Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier pulled up from fourth to take the bronze.
