Japan leads the medal table with ten gold medals after two of the six events into the 2017/18 ISU World Cup speed skating series. Norway and the Netherlands both took four gold medals. After fierce competition at the sea-level rinks of Heerenveen (NED) and Stavanger (NOR), the high-altitude tracks of Calgary (1-3 December) and Salt Lake City (8-10 December) are ready for some superfast racing.

The 2015 world silver medalist Satoko Miyahara of Japan won the Ladies gold in an event full of surprises as competition wrapped up at Bridgestone Skate America on Sunday. Kaori Sakamoto, also of Japan, took the silver medal and Bradie Tennell (USA), competing in her first senior Grand Prix event, earned the bronze.

Two-time world medalists Maia Shibutani/Alex Shibutani (USA) turned back the clock to record a confident victory on home ice, taking the gold medal at Bridgestone Skate America with a little over 12 points to spare. The 2014 World champions Anna Cappellini/Luca Lanotte of Italy claimed the silver medal and the bronze went to Russia’s Victoria Sinitsina/Nikita Katsalapov. Shibutani/Shibutani and Cappellini/ Lanotte qualified for the Grand Prix Final.

The 2014 world champions Anna Cappellini/Luca Lanotte of Italy came second and Russia’s Victoria Sinitsina/Nikita Katsalapov were third.

Four Continents champion Nathan Chen (USA) held on to first place in what was a dramatic Men’s Free Skating event at Bridgestone Skate America in Lake Placid on Saturday. Adam Rippon (USA) took the silver medal and the bronze went to Russia’s Sergei Voronov. All three qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final.

China’s Xiaoyu Yu/Hao Zhang claimed the silver medal while two-time World Champions Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford of Canada dropped to third. All three teams qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final.

Four Continents Champion Nathan Chen (USA) made a statement in the Men’s Short Program at Bridgestone Skate America in Lake Placid on Friday, taking the lead with 15 points to spare. Adam Rippon (USA) and Russia’s Sergei Voronov (RUS) follow in second and third, with good chances to make the Grand Prix Final.

Two-time World Champions Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford of Canada took the lead as Bridgestone Skate America opened with the Pairs Short Program. China’s Xiaoyu Yu/Hao Zhang came second followed closely by World silver medalists Aliona Savchenko/Bruno Massot of Germany. The top three teams are separated by a little less than three points.

The second ISU Shanghai Trophy starts on November 24-26, 2017. The event combines Synchronized Skating, Short Track Speed Skating and Figure Skating.  It is the first time that an ISU Event combines the three disciplines.
