The next generation of young Skaters takes center stage at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships February 27 – March 5 in Calgary, AB (CAN). A total of 179 Skaters/Couples representing 44 ISU Members have been entered for the Championships: 42 Junior Men, 47 Junior Women, 14 Junior Pairs and 31 Junior Ice Dance couples.

The ISU World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships take place at the Hala Olivia, Gdansk, Poland, from February 22-25, 2024. The competitions will award medals over 500m, 1000m and 1500m for both genders, with a 3000m relay for women and a 5000m relay for men, plus a 2000m mixed relay.

When Jordan Stolz (USA) is at a Speed Skating rink, Bob Corby is never far away. A household name in US speed skating in the 1980s, Corby left the sport in the early 1990s, but he decided to lace up his speed skating boots once more, when a 14-year-old kid from Kewaskum, Wisconsin, called him about five years ago. Since then, the now 19-year-old six-time World Champion and his 73-year-old coach are inseparable.

She won titles and a silver medal at the ISU World Speed Skating Single Distances Championships in Calgary (CAN) last weekend, but Irene Schouten (NED) decided to call it quits. “After 15 years of top sports, I have decided to quit.” she said in a personal social media post on Monday morning. The 31-year-old Dutchwoman leaves the sport as one of the all-time greats, having collected three Olympic titles, a World Allround title, eight World Single Distance titles and five European Single Distance titles.

As if it were another day at the office, Jordan Stolz (USA) ticked the last box of his second consecutive triple crown at the ISU World Single Distances Championships in Calgary on Sunday. The 19-year-old American defended his 1500m title after already having retained his 500m and 1000m titles. Earlier on Sunday, Davide Ghiotto (ITA) won his second consecutive 10,000m title, leaving home favorite Ted-Jan Bloemen (CAN) 8.19 seconds behind after 25 laps.

Joy Beune (NED) surprised herself and the rest of the field when she won the 5000m world title on the final day of the ISU World Single Distances Championships in Calgary. She kept Irene Schouten (NED) from winning a record four gold medals at a single championships, and then went on to take bronze in the 1500m to conclude a breakthrough tournament. Miho Takagi (JPN) won her second individual World Single Distances title with gold in the 1500m.

“I got beaten by probably the greatest Mass Start skater of all time,” Livio Wenger (SUI) said Saturday after he took bronze behind Bart Swings (BEL), who added a second consecutive Mass Start World title to five World Cup trophies, three European titles and an Olympic gold medal. Wenger himself gave Switzerland an historic first medal at an ISU World Single Distances Championships, while Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu (CAN) celebrated silver in front of an enthusiastic home crowd in the packed Calgary Oval. Before the Mass Start final, Jordan Stolz (USA) defended his 1000m title, one day after doing the same in the 500m.

“Finally,” Miho Takagi (JPN) sighed with a smile. The Japanese superstar had won almost every possible prize in international speed skating, except for an individual World Single Distance title. On Saturday, she finally filled that spot in her trophy cabinet with a gold medal in the 1000m at the ISU World Single Distances Championships. Irene Schouten (NED) collected her third world title in three days, overcoming an early fall in the Mass Start to outsprint rival Ivanie Blondin (CAN) for the win.

Exactly 18 years after Italy won the Team Pursuit title at the Olympic Winter Games Torino, Andrea Giovannini, Michele Malfatti and Davide Ghiotto (ITA) seized a historic first Team Pursuit World title for their country. The speed skating Squadra Azzurra left Norway and Canada behind in silver and bronze. Jordan Stolz (USA) opened his medal account at the ISU World Single Distance Championships with 500m gold in a track record time of 33.69 seconds.

After Joy Beune, Irene Schouten and Marijke Groenewoud skated an immaculate race to win Team Pursuit gold, redeeming themselves for last year’s disqualification, Femke Kok (NED) defended her 500m title with a perfect performance, leaving silver medalist Kim Min Sun (KOR) .36 seconds adrift.
