It is with regret and sorrow that the ISU learned of the passing of multiple ISU European Championships medalist, four-time National Dutch Champion and two-time Olympian, Mrs. Joan Haanappel who passed away at 83 years old.

Xandra Velzeboer (NED) is the fastest woman on ice. The 500m world record holder and reigning World Champion is the woman to beat in Short Track’s shortest distance – and she isn’t in the mood to give up her throne in a hurry.

On December 3, 2023, the International Skating Union (ISU), in collaboration with numerous partners, national federations, and skating clubs worldwide, celebrated the second edition of the World Ice Skating Day (WISD). The event was widely hailed as a success, boasting organized festivities in 53 countries and at 130 ice rinks globally (as reported here). 

After a roller coaster season with surprise winners, big champions and spectacular world records, long track Speed Skating is gearing up for a last peak at the ISU World Speed Skating Allround & Sprint Championships. It’s not about single distance medals, but about consistency and stamina over the course of a four-distance tournament. In the men’s Allround event threefold champion Patrick Roest (NED) will take on whirlwind Jordan Stolz (USA) in a battle between endurance and speed, while in the women’s field Miho Takagi (JPN) is taking on the challenge of skating both the Sprint and the Allround championships.

Hot favorites Anastasiia Metelkina/Luka Berulava (GEO) skated to a commanding lead as the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships opened Wednesday in Taipei City (TPE) with the Junior Pairs Short Program.

The 2024 ISU World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships confirmed two things: first, the future of the sport is in safe hands after skaters from across the globe captivated the crowds in Gdansk, Poland. And second, Shin Dong Min (KOR) and Wang Ye (CHN) are gold-minted superstars in waiting.

The next generation of young Skaters takes center stage at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships February 27 – March 5 in Calgary, AB (CAN). A total of 179 Skaters/Couples representing 44 ISU Members have been entered for the Championships: 42 Junior Men, 47 Junior Women, 14 Junior Pairs and 31 Junior Ice Dance couples.

The ISU World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships take place at the Hala Olivia, Gdansk, Poland, from February 22-25, 2024. The competitions will award medals over 500m, 1000m and 1500m for both genders, with a 3000m relay for women and a 5000m relay for men, plus a 2000m mixed relay.
