The Covid-19 restrictions somehow were a blessing in disguise for Sverre Lunde Pedersen (NOR). The silver medallist from last year’s ISU World Allround Speed Skating Championships had more time with his family than usual over the summer, which he mostly spent with his wife and son Svein who was born in May. “It’s great to watch him grow,” Pedersen says. The Norwegian used the relatively quiet summer for a reset of his body after an exhausting and injury hampered season. He’s looking forward to racing this winter, even if it has to be in a bubble.

There is no doubt that the international Skating season 2020/21 is different from all other seasons athletes and fans have known. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to many changes and restrictions. Nevertheless, athletes and coaches have been working hard and are eager to show the results of their work. The ISU Challenger event Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf, Germany, is the oldest continuously held Figure Skating competition in the world outside ISU Championships and kicks off the 2020/21 season as the first international event.

Following the cancellation of the ISU World Cup Speed Skating Competitions and ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating Competitions announced in ISU Communication No. 2345, the ISU Council concluded that the first ISU Junior World Cup Speed Skating Competition in Minsk (BLR), on November 28-29, 2020 cannot be held as planned and is therefore cancelled.

The stars that impress us at the World and Olympic stage today all have started out at the junior level and began their journey with the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating series. One of them is Vincent Zhou (USA), who claimed the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships title in 2017. The next season, he made the Olympic team and finished a respectable 6th in PyeongChang. In 2019, Zhou claimed the bronze medal at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships and the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships.
