Safeguarding
The ISU takes the pledge in support of Safe Sport Day
08 Aug 2025
Every year on August 8th, the International Skating Union (ISU) proudly joins the Safe Sport Day initiative, whose mission is to advance safe, inclusive sporting environments free from violence, harassment, or abuse.
Skaters deserve to train and compete under conditions that protect their safety, dignity and peace of mind - physically, emotionally, or psychologically. They deserve to be heard when something feels wrong, to receive mental health support when the ice feels too heavy, and to rely on coaches, officials, parents and leaders, who will always put their well-being first.
“Protecting athletes isn’t optional — it’s the foundation of sport. Safe Sport ensures every athlete, at every level, can train and compete in an environment free from abuse, harm, or fear.”
Madison Chock (USA), Ice Dancer
“For me Safe Sport means an environment where everyone, athletes, coaches and staff, feel respected, supported and protected, both physically and emotionally. It's about pushing limits without crossing boundaries, and it's not a one-size-fits-all.”
Kim Boutin (CAN), Short Track Speed Skater
Safeguarding is one of the five key pillars of ISU Vision 2030, the organization’s strategic roadmap to modernize governance and elevate its sports. Across all its policies and activities, the ISU is committed to promoting the skaters’ well-being, ensuring their safety, and maintaining a fair and clean competitive environment (read about the ISU Safeguarding policy here). To enforce this core principle, the ISU relies on the following measures:
- Safeguarding education for all members of the skating community.
- Early reporting systems and trusted channels for skaters to speak up.
- A full-time ISU Safeguarding Officer acting as a neutral point of contact any member of the ice-skating community wishing to report cases of abuse or harassment (read here).
- Mental health resources (such as the ISU e-Learning platform “eRink”) and opportunities for supportive conversations.
- A culture where well-being is a priority and a foundation for success
- Increased contributions to Members: in 2024, the ISU Congress approved a 20% increase in annual contributions to help Members develop and implement safeguarding initiatives in their countries.
“Safe Sport is a place where athletes are supported and encouraged by their coaches/mentors to be themselves. Where people’s boundaries are respected. A place where it’s ok to talk about problems and struggles and you are heard and supported.”
Petra Jaszapati (HUN), Short Track Speed Skater
"To me, Safe Sport means knowing my child can thrive in a positive, supportive environment, where both athletes and parents feel confident to voice their concerns without fear of negative consequences."
Lucy Trochet (SUI), Parent of a Skater
“For me Safe Sport means being part of a sports environment or group that is free from abuse and discrimination. It’s a place where you can be yourself, are respected, protected and supported - emotionally, and mentally.”
Filip Taschler (CZE), Ice Dancer
“For me Safe Sport is a space where I’m seen, respected, and empowered to become the best version of myself. It’s where dreams are built on trust, not fear.”
Kevin Aymoz (FRA), Figure Skater
By amplifying safeguarding initiatives and giving skaters a voice, the ISU is committed to building an environment where everyone can experience the joy and enjoy the thrill of skating.
On this Safe Sport Day, let’s stand together, support one another, and Skate On, Together!
