Charles Hamelin has tried jumping out of a plane and throwing himself down an ice canal but nothing can replace the thrill of Short Track Speed Skating for the Canadian legend.

When Julian Macaraeg of the Philippines and Ethan de Rose of New Zealand went to collect the helmet numbers for their teams at the first ISU World Cup Short Track event of the Olympic season, the envelope contained only one number. They represent a small group of lone skaters who relish the opportunity to compete at the highest level.

The ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series 2021/22 continues this week with Skate Canada International in Vancouver (CAN). The event features stars such as three-time and reigning ISU World Champion Nathan Chen (USA), 2021 ISU World silver medalist Elizaveta Tuktamysheva (RUS) and 2018 Olympic Pairs silver medalists Wenjing Sui/Cong Han (CHN). 

After a dizzying, high-octane start to the season in Beijing, the ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating series moves on to Nagoya, Japan from 28-31 October, the second installment of an Asian double-header of races.

Despite significant success in Short Track, long track Speed Skating has long been a forgotten sport in Great Britain. Yet, the nation does have a rich Speed Skating legacy. “The Brits were instrumental in writing the rules for long track Speed Skating,” says Britain’s former racer Stephen Airey, who hopes to see the first British Speed Skater at the Olympic Games since 1992 in Beijing next year.

Russia’s Alexandra Trusova struck gold in what was a high-level competition at the ISU Grand Prix Guaranteed Rate Skate America in Las Vegas Sunday. Daria Usacheva, also from Russia, claimed the silver in her debut at the senior-level Grand Prix while Young You of the Republic of Korea moved up from fifth to capture bronze. 

Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donohue (USA) captured their fourth consecutive Skate America title at the ISU Grand Prix in Las Vegas Sunday. Teammates Madison Chock/Evan Bates danced off with the silver medal while Canadians Laurence Fournier Beaudry/Nikolaj Sorensen took the bronze.

Beijing saved the best for last as the first ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating session of the season came to an end. Suzanne Schulting (NED) renewed her dominance in the Women’s 1000m and hosts China got to celebrate two gold medals in the Relays.

Vincent Zhou(USA) skated to his first ISU Grand Prix gold medal at Guaranteed Rate Skate America, ending the winning streak of three-time ISU World Champion Nathan Chen (USA), who took the bronze medal. The silver went to Japan’s Shoma Uno.

Two-time European champions Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov of Russia skated to gold in the Pairs event at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Guaranteed Rate Skate America in Las Vegas on Saturday.

2021 World bronze medalist Alexandra Trusova led Russia's Women to a 1-2-3 in the Short Program at the ISU Grand Prix Guaranteed Rate Skate America Saturday in Las Vegas. Daria Usacheva is currently ranked second, ahead of Ksenia Sinitsina.

Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donohue (USA) edged out their teammates Madison Chock/Evan Bates by just 1.03 points as the ISU Grand Prix Skate America continued on Saturday in Las Vegas (USA) with the Rhythm Dance.

Russia and Hungary dominated the opening day of Finals at the ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating session in Beijing, sharing the two gold medals up for grabs in the Men’s events at the Capital Indoor Stadium on Saturday.
