Joy Beune (NED) surprised herself and the rest of the field when she won the 5000m world title on the final day of the ISU World Single Distances Championships in Calgary. She kept Irene Schouten (NED) from winning a record four gold medals at a single championships, and then went on to take bronze in the 1500m to conclude a breakthrough tournament. Miho Takagi (JPN) won her second individual World Single Distances title with gold in the 1500m.

“I got beaten by probably the greatest Mass Start skater of all time,” Livio Wenger (SUI) said Saturday after he took bronze behind Bart Swings (BEL), who added a second consecutive Mass Start World title to five World Cup trophies, three European titles and an Olympic gold medal. Wenger himself gave Switzerland an historic first medal at an ISU World Single Distances Championships, while Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu (CAN) celebrated silver in front of an enthusiastic home crowd in the packed Calgary Oval. Before the Mass Start final, Jordan Stolz (USA) defended his 1000m title, one day after doing the same in the 500m.

“Finally,” Miho Takagi (JPN) sighed with a smile. The Japanese superstar had won almost every possible prize in international speed skating, except for an individual World Single Distance title. On Saturday, she finally filled that spot in her trophy cabinet with a gold medal in the 1000m at the ISU World Single Distances Championships. Irene Schouten (NED) collected her third world title in three days, overcoming an early fall in the Mass Start to outsprint rival Ivanie Blondin (CAN) for the win.

Exactly 18 years after Italy won the Team Pursuit title at the Olympic Winter Games Torino, Andrea Giovannini, Michele Malfatti and Davide Ghiotto (ITA) seized a historic first Team Pursuit World title for their country. The speed skating Squadra Azzurra left Norway and Canada behind in silver and bronze. Jordan Stolz (USA) opened his medal account at the ISU World Single Distance Championships with 500m gold in a track record time of 33.69 seconds.

It was double gold for the Dutch women on the second day of the ISU World Single Distances Championships in Calgary. After Joy Beune, Irene Schouten and Marijke Groenewoud skated an immaculate race to win Team Pursuit gold, redeeming themselves for last year’s disqualification, Femke Kok (NED) defended her 500m title with a perfect performance, leaving silver medalist Kim Min Sun (KOR) .36 seconds adrift.

“It's a world record, it's a gold medal, we obviously feel amazing,” said Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu (CAN) with a big smile after he came off the ice a Team Sprint champion with teammates Anders Johnson and Laurent Dubreuil. The Canadian men followed the path of their female teammates, who also took gold in the Team Sprint on Thursday. Before the spectacular team events brought the first day of the ISU World Single Distances Championships to a close, Patrick Roest (NED) retained his 5000m title, beating long distance World Cup winner Davide Ghiotto (ITA).

“I really wanted this one, because I know I actually am the best. I can say that now, can’t I?” Irene Schouten (NED) indeed showed she is the best in the 3000m as the ISU World Single Distances Championships began on Thursday. Isabelle Weidemann (CAN) finished second and Martina Sáblíková (CZE) third. All three medalists had their own bumpy run-up to the tournament. In the women’s Team Sprint, Carolina Hiller, Maddison Pearman and Ivanie Blondin (CAN) won the first Canadian title of the championships on home ice in Calgary.

Almost everything Angel Daleman (NED) touched in Hachinohe City turned to gold last weekend at the ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships. The 16-year-old Dutchwoman won all but two of the events in which she competed, seizing five individual golds and the Team Sprint title. The teenager also picked up a silver medal in the Team Pursuit. In the more-balanced Men’s competition, Sigurd Henriksen (NOR) won his third consecutive 5000m title.

Jordan Stolz (USA) and Angel Daleman (NED) dominated last season’s ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships, each winning four individual gold medals. Stolz went on to win three World Single Distance titles at senior level the following month. And while the 19-year-old American is no longer eligible for the junior championships, Daleman, at 16, is. The Dutchwoman has three more chances for World Junior Championship glory, the first of which is this weekend in Hachinohe City, Japan.

Metoděj Jílek (CZE) and Meike Veen (NED) have been crowned the winners of this season’s ISU Junior World Cup Speed Skating series. The 17-year-old Czech and the 19-year-old Dutchwoman both won two individual gold medals to seize the overall World Cup Trophies on the third and final weekend of the series in Hachinohe (JPN). With four overall trophies, the Netherlands topped the nations ranking.

Sandrine Tas (BEL) and Ramona Härdi (SUI) took historic first-ever female speed skating World Cup medals for Belgium and Switzerland on the final day of the World Cup season in Quebec City. Taking advantage of the favorites’ focus on the overall ranking, Tas won the Mass Start, edging out Härdi in the final sprint. Valérie Maltais (CAN) took the Mass Start Trophy. Earlier on Sunday, Femke Kok (NED) won the final 500m race of the World Cup season, while Joy Beune won the 1500m.

Polish sprinters had a field day on Sunday to conclude the season’s final World Cup in Quebec City. Marek Kania, Piotr Michalski and Damian Zurek (POL) edged out Norway by .09 seconds to take Team Sprint gold. Individually, Kania (silver) and Michalski (bronze) seized their first medals of the season in the 500m, only to be beaten by the unstoppable Jordan Stolz (USA), who took his fourth gold medal of the weekend. Finishing sixth, Wataru Morishige (JPN) secured the 500m World Cup Trophy.

After four second-place finishes and one third, Andrea Giovannini (ITA) finally managed to take home the Mass Start World Cup Trophy. The 30-year-old Italian finished fifth in the final race in Quebec City on Saturday, collecting enough points to pass absent leader Bart Swings (BEL) in the ranking. Seventeen-year-old Shomu Sasaki (JPN) won the race to take his first World Cup gold, while Jordan Stolz (USA) struck again in the 1500m and the 500m, edging out home favorite Laurent Dubreuil (CAN) by .08 seconds in the shortest distance. Ning Zhongyan (CHN) won the 1500m ranking, grabbing his second trophy of the weekend.

Kim Min Sun (KOR) set up a great season finale in the 500m World Cup classification. Winning the penultimate race in a track record 37.69 seconds at the Gaétan Boucher Oval in Quebec City, Canada on Saturday, the Korean title defender narrowed the gap with leader Erin Jackson (USA) to 14 points. Jackson finished fifth, while Femke Kok (NED) took silver just .01 seconds behind Kim. Tian Ruining (CHN) seized her first individual World Cup podium in 38.05. The final 500m is scheduled for Sunday. Together with Marrit Fledderus and Naomi Verkerk (NED), Kok won the Team Sprint, taking home the World Cup Trophy in that event.
