All eyes at the third and final ISU Junior World Cup Speed Skating event of the season in Hachinohe will be on Angel Daleman (NED) and Finn Sonnekalb (GER) this weekend. The pair scooped every individual Speed Skating gold on offer at the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in the women’s and men’s competitions, respectively. Quebec City will host the ISU World Cup Speed Skating for the second time in history when the final and decisive races of the 2023-24 World Cup season take place this weekend. It’s the first time since 1992 that the city has hosted Speed Skating, when the Gaétan Boucher Oval in Sainte-Foy was still an outdoor rink. The times in sea-level Quebec will not be as fast as in high altitude Salt Lake City last week, but there’s a lot at stake, from World Cup Trophies to qualification slots for the World Single Distance Championships in Calgary (15-18 February).

“This is the event I’ve been looking forward to the whole year,” said Irene Schouten (NED) two days before the ISU World Single Distance Championships, which start on Thursday. The defending 5000m Champion is not the only one. After an exciting and exhausting World Cup Series, the tournament at the 1988 Olympic Oval in Calgary is the pinnacle of the speed skating season. Last year, Jordan Stolz (USA) won a record three individual events, but that doesn’t change his feelings going into the races. “(I don’t feel) more pressure, maybe there’s more expectations,’ he said.
