With skaters trying to steer away from the chaos on the ice during the first-ever Speed Skating Mixed Relay at the Youth Olympic Winter Games, China’s Liu Yunqi (CHN) and Pan Baoshuo (CHN) navigated to gold in a dramatic photo finish.

With the continental Championships in the books, international Speed Skating continues with the season’s fifth and penultimate World Cup leg in Salt Lake City. After many personal and national best times during the ISU Four Continents Championships at the Utah Olympic Oval last week, the World Cup promises to be even faster and more competitive now that the European contingent is back in the mix. A double 1000m will be the main ingredient of a spectacular weekend, that concludes with the new Mixed Gender relay, which features in the World Cup program for the second time.

Short Track prodigy Zhang Xinzhe (CHN) finished his Winter Youth Olympic Games on a high as he helped China to gold in the first-ever Mixed Team Relay on Wednesday. For Zhang, the Relay gold was his fourth medal after clinching the Men's 1000m gold and silver in the 500m and 1500m.

Jordan Stolz (USA) set a national record while seizing 1000m gold at the ISU Four Continents Championships in Salt Lake City, USA on Sunday, while his compatriots Casey Dawson, Emery Lehman and Ethan Cepuran edged out Canada by .04 seconds to win the Team Pursuit. Chung Jae Won (KOR) brought the championships to a conclusion by retaining his Mass Start title with a powerful sprint to the line.

Ivanie Blondin (CAN) seized two gold medals on the final day of the ISU Four Continents Championships in Salt Lake City, USA on Sunday. After winning the Team Pursuit title with Valérie Maltais and Isabelle Weidemann, Blondin claimed the Mass Start in dominant fashion. In between, Japan's Miho Takagi added the 1000m title to the 1500m crown she won on Friday.

With the top three skaters separated by just .08 seconds, the 5000m podium was closer than the 500m podium in the men’s competition at the ISU Four Continents Championships in Salt Lake City, USA on Saturday. Casey Dawson (USA) beat Graeme Fish (CAN) by .02 seconds to win the longest distance, with Ted-Jan Bloemen (CAN) third.

Canada took both available men's titles on the opening day of the fourth ISU Four Continents Championships in Salt Lake City on Friday. Connor Howe (CAN) was the fastest man in the 1500m, stopping the clock at 1:43.19, while Laurent Dubreuil, Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu and last-minute substitute skater Yankun Zhao (CAN) took home Team Sprint gold in 1:18.54.

Miho Takagi (JPN) shook off some mid-season rust on Friday, winning two gold medals at her first ISU Four Continents Championships appearance. The Japanese superstar recorded a season-best time of 1:52.37 to win the 1500m, after she had already snatched gold in the Team Sprint with Kurumi Inagawa and Ayano Sato at the Utah Olympic Oval.

The ISU Four Continents Championships are the latest addition to the international Speed Skating calendar. At the first three editions in Milwaukee (2019), Calgary (2022) and Quebec (2023) many top Skaters from outside Europe decided to skip the tournament, but the fourth edition is held on the fastest ice on earth in Salt Lake City and everyone is eager to start.

Marijke Groenewoud (NED) crowned herself queen of the 2024 ISU European Speed Skating Championships when she collected her third gold medal with a solo finish after a powerful attack in the Mass Start on Sunday. Earlier on Sunday, Groenewoud had seized her second title, together with Irene Schouten and Joy Beune in the Team Pursuit, with Germany and Switzerland surprisingly taking silver and bronze. In between, Jutta Leerdam (NED) won her third straight European gold in the 1000m.

Peder Kongshaug (NOR) edged out his idol Kjeld Nuis (NED) to take his career first individual international title in the 1500m at the ISU European Speed Skating Championships in Heerenveen on Sunday. In the 500m Jenning de Boo (NED) also took his maiden title, ahead of Marten Liiv (EST) and Marek Kania (POL). Bart Swings (BEL) concluded the tournament with a powerful sprint to seize his third straight European title in the Mass Start.

The Dutch women won five of six available medals on the second day of the ISU European Speed Skating Championships in Heerenveen. Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong, Marijke Groenewoud and Joy Beune swept the 1500m podium, while Femke Kok and Jutta Leerdam took gold and silver in the 500m. Vanessa Herzog (AUT) was the only non-Dutch medalist in Saturday’s women’s competition, with bronze in the 500m.
