A New Olympic Chapter for Speed Skating: Team Sprint to Debut at Alpes 2030

A New Olympic Chapter for Speed Skating: Team Sprint to Debut at Alpes 2030

08 Jul 2026

The International Skating Union (ISU) proudly welcomes the decision by the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to include the Speed Skating Men's and Women's Team Sprint events in the Alpes 2030 Olympic Winter Games program.

The decision marks another important milestone in the continued evolution of Speed Skating and reflects the ISU's commitment to innovative competition formats in the sport while preserving its rich traditions.

ISU President Jae Youl Kim said: "The inclusion of the Team Sprint at the Olympic Winter Games Alpes 2030 is an important step in the continued evolution of Speed Skating. At the recent 60th Ordinary ISU Congress, our Members gave tremendous support to the ongoing transformation of our sports - embracing innovation and modernization while preserving the unique identity of each discipline. Team Sprint perfectly embodies that vision. It combines power, athletic excellence and teamwork in an exciting race format that showcases the incredible talent of our athletes while delivering a compelling experience for fans around the world. Its Olympic debut is a powerful example of how we can honour our heritage while shaping the future of skating."

Since its introduction to the ISU Speed Skating World Cup during the 2018/19 season, the Team Sprint has established itself as an exciting addition on the international circuit. Featuring teams of three skaters racing over three laps, the event blends speed, technical and tactical precision as well as seamless teamwork in a fast-paced spectator-friendly format that delivers excitement from start to finish.

In the Team Sprint, two teams of three skaters start simultaneously from opposite sides of the track, halfway the straight, and race over three laps. All three skaters begin together as a team, but at the end of each lap the lead skater peels away, leaving the remaining teammates to continue. By the final lap, only the third skater remains, crossing the finish line to set the team's official time. The team with the fastest time over the three laps wins the race.

The inclusion of the Men's and Women's Team Sprint also expands the Olympic Speed Skating programme, creating additional medal opportunities for athletes while bringing one of the sport's most dynamic events to the Olympic stage.
