Sophia Baram/Daniel Tioumentsev (USA) grabbed the lead in the Junior Pairs Short Program over favorites and World Junior silver medalists Anastasia Golubeva/Hektor Giotopoulos Moore of Australia. Cayla Smith/Andy Deng (USA) came third.

Baram/Tioumentsev delivered an upbeat performance to ‘Bla Bla Bla Cha Cha Cha’, completing a triple twist, double Axel, throw double Lutz and level four lift, spin, footwork and death spiral. The JGP Ostrava Champions netted 63.62 points.

“I felt very happy after our fourth element just because the first three elements were important to us, and after the lift it was just “perform, perform, perform, and smile”, Baram said.

“We were fighting to get first place, of course, we want to be and stay in the top, so we were just fighting,” she added.

Tioumentsev agreed: “I think the program went pretty well, especially for the first Junior Grand Prix final. I think I couldn’t ask for anything better."

Golubeva/Giotopoulos Moore opened their program to ‘Architect of the Mind’ with a triple twist and a double Axel, but then Golubeva stepped out of the throw triple toe loop, but was able to avoid a fall. The 2022 ISU World Junior silver medalists scored 60.19 points.

“Today it was not perfect but I tried. I made two small mistakes. I wanted to skate much better, but it happens, so I’m going to adjust and next time I will know that it shouldn’t be this way,” Golubeva analyzed.

Giotopoulos Moore agreed. “Our feelings are a bit mixed. We had a few mistakes here and there. We've actually been in Poland for the last 2 1/2 months since the Junior Grand Prix.

“We've been training in a small town called Torun with a group of ice dancers and a group of single skaters and it's been really good, we actually had a really good preparation and the skating was getting very well and they treated us very, very well in Poland,” he added.

Skating to ‘Summer of 42’, Smith/Deng produced a triple twist, double Axel and throw double Lutz to earn 55.21 points.

“It was the first time we've done the triple twist in a competition, so I think… not bad for a first time! We have something to improve on for Saturday [Free Skating], but overall I’m very happy with it,” Smith noted.

Violetta Sierova/Ivan Khobta (UKR) struggled with their lift to come fourth on 50.74 points. Haruna Murakami/Sumitada Moriguchi (JPN) placed fifth (46.80 points) followed by Chloe Panetta/Kieran Thrasher (CAN) on 44.35 points.
