The main axes of CLEAN SPORT are testing, prevention and education.
The ISU has a comprehensive year-round, in and out of competition, anti-doping program that incorporates both urine and blood testing.
The ISU Anti-Doping Rules and ISU Anti-Doping Procedures are compiled in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and shall apply to all Anti-Doping Activities over which the ISU and its Members have jurisdiction.
The International-Level Skaters to whom the specific provisions of the ISU Anti-Doping Rules and ISU Anti-Doping Procedures regarding Testing, TUEs, whereabouts information, results management and appeals apply are:
a. Any Skater who is part of the ISU Registered Testing Pool or ISU Testing Pool.
b. Any Skater who participates in ISU Events, according to Rule 100/3, b) and c) of the ISU General Regulations. (full definition)
A key element of the ISU Anti-Doping program is the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP), which monitor longitudinal haematological and steroidal profile. This long-term monitoring of the skaters' values allows the ISU Medical Commission to detect any anomalies or specific changes over time from which subsequent intelligent targeting testing is conducted.
In order to protect the clean Skaters, since July 2016 the ISU has implemented a “Samples Long Term Storage and Reanalyze” Policy (ISU Communication 2026)
The ISU Pure as Ice Program stands for doping-free sport with a goal of prevention. Its objective is to prevent intentional or unintentional use of prohibited substances or methods by athletes and to preserve the spirit and integrity of sport and athletes.

In order to help the athletes understand the main changes to the World Anti-Doping Code (Code), especially those that have the greatest impact on Athletes, WADA has published an Athlete’s Guide to the Significant Changes in the 2021 Code.
This Guide aims to give Athletes a simplified overview of what’s new in 2021.
WADA publishes annually a List of Prohibited Substances and Methods. It is valid from January 1 each year.

In order for athletes to check whether medications that they take, or are considering taking, contain prohibited substances, many ADOs have compiled databases and/or lists for athletes to check medications. Here is a link to such a website: http://www.globaldro.com/
The ISU holds no responsibility for the accuracy or completeness of the information provided by this website. Athletes should check with their doctor in case of any doubts.
Further information on specific Substances, Methods, Medical Treatment, Dietary and Nutritional Supplements is available on the WADA Questions & Answers on the Prohibited List.
Skaters, like anyone else, may have illnesses or conditions that require them to take particular medications. If Skaters are required to take the substances or methods for their treatment which are on the WADA List of Prohibited Substances & Methods, they may ask for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) to giving them authorization to take the medicine or use a method. The TUE may be granted either by the ISU or by the National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO), depending on the status-level of the Skater as explained in the ISU TUE Policy documents.
Visit the WADA website Therapeutic Use Exemptions for complementary information such as:
- Checklists to provide guidance and support to athletes, their physicians and Anti-Doping Organizations (ADOs) during the TUE application process
- Medical Information to Support the Decisions of Therapeutic Use Exemption Committees (TUECs) / TUE Physician Guidelines
