Short Track speed skaters wear some pretty artistic helmets these day, but the very best athletes will be hoping that their headgear is covered up this weekend.

Why? Because whoever is wearing the ‘Red Hat’ (a simple helmet cover) in both the Ladies’ and Men’s event, is the current leader in the points tally, as they fight to be crowned Overall World Champion for 2019.

Points are awarded after each distance final, and the racer with the most cumulative points at any one point dons the red.

It helps the fans keep track of who is winning, and builds up to the last race – the 3000m Super Final, after which the scores are finally calculated and the woman and man in red gets the colour they desire the most: gold.
