For Hwang Dae Heon, perhaps the hardest part of his whole year is already done: amid fierce competition, he has made it into the Republic of Korea’s squad for the crucial 2021-2022 Short Track Speed Skating season.

It’s with great sadness that the ISU learned of the passing away of Ruslan Zakharov (RUS). The 23-year-old sprinter won a bronze 500m medal at the ISU World Junior Championships in Helsinki in 2017.

Skaters from Russia and the USA dominated the seventh and last ISU Junior Grand Prix event Cup of Austria in Linz (AUT). Georgia and Canada picked up a bronze medal each. The event was also the last chance to qualify for the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final.

All for one and one for all – that is what counts in a team sport. Synchronized Skating brings together a group of young women that are training and competing. Speed Skating is about power, stamina, technique and pace, but apart from physical abilities, mental health is just as important. Dutch coach Erik Bouwman and sports psychologist Ivo Spanjersberg believe that mental health can make the difference when it comes to winning silverware at the Olympics.

Long track speed skating is one of the few sports which was always included in the Olympic program since the inaugural Winter Games in Chamonix, France. The other sports are nordic skiing, ice hockey and figure skating, with the last two already featuring at the Olympic Summer Games before the separate Winter Games were introduced in 1924.

Building a balanced, happy individual is just as important as developing a skater competing on any stage. That is the view of Team Canada’s Short Track Speed Skating mental preparation specialist Fabien Abejean, and it is non-negotiable.
