Many Ukrainian athletes have fled to Europe while others have returned home although it is not safe. More than 100 Skaters have left the country and are currently spread out all over Europe – from Poland to Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Estonia to Romania and some even fled to Canada. Whether they are in Ukraine or in another country far from home, most of the Skaters want to continue to train and are preparing for the coming season.

On the last and decisive day of the 58th ISU Congress, the assembly elected with a total of 77 votes Mr. Jae Youl Kim (KOR), who becomes the 12th President and the first from outside Europe to take the helm of the International Skating Union. He succeeds Mr. Jan Dijkema (NED), who has been leading the federation over the past six years.

The 58th Ordinary ISU Congress continued on June 8, 2022 with the split Sessions for the Figure Skating and Speed Skating Branches. During the sessions, Delegates can only vote on the Special Rules and Technical Regulations, with a two-thirds majority required.

The ISU Congress voted in favor of the ISU Council Proposal 22 to gradually increase the age limit for Senior Skaters from 15 to 17 years for the sake of protecting the physical and mental health, and emotional well-being of the Skaters. There will be no change for the season 2022/23. An increase to 16 years for the season 2023/24 and an increase to 17 years for the season 2024/25 and subsequent seasons will then be implemented.

Some work in ice shows, others become officials or work in federations and many, if not the most, start a career as a coach or choreographer. Most athletes think in Olympic cycles and when an Olympic season ends, this is often the time Skaters choose to retire. They have reached their goals or they are just ready to move on. Not surprisingly, the end of the 2021/22 season marked the end of the career of many Skaters, some of which fans have followed for a very long time. Others might still ponder their decision or will announce their retirement later. In many cases, the Skaters stay connected to the Figure Skating world. Some will perform in shows and tours while others start a new career as coaches or choreographers.

The ISU Council approved a new ISU Athlete Safeguarding Policy and related updates to the ISU Code of Ethics. The Athlete Safeguarding Policy was drafted in close cooperation with the ISU Athletes Commission.

For the first time, the Juniors concluded the Figure Skating season as the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships, originally scheduled for the beginning of March in Sofia (BUL), were moved to mid-April and to Tallinn (EST) due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2022 in Montpellier (FRA) wrapped up a long and exciting Olympic season for the senior-level Skaters and provided many highlights. Olympic Champions and medalists shone again, but we saw new faces on the podium as well and history was made.
