Athletes often struggle with when to hang up their shoes, or in this case, skates. That looming decision of retirement might come more easily when you have won everything possible in your sport like Charles Hamelin (CAN).

The 2022 ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships take place at the Maurice-Richard Arena, Montreal, from April 8-10 and several big names will be looking to write their own piece of history in Canada.

For the fifth consecutive year on April 6th, the International Skating Union (ISU) is proud to renew its commitment to the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace – a worldwide initiative promoting sport as a tool for sustainable peace and positive social change. 

During the past two years, the Covid-19 pandemic has forced many Synchronized Skating teams to pivot their training to alternative options. This challenge has helped the sport to evolve into a more competitive field, with many more countries building stronger skaters. Teams around the world were forced to become very creative with their training options, such as virtual off-ice sessions or skating challenges on TikTok.

Florence Brunelle (CAN) is not your average teenager. Over the past couple of months the 18-year-old Short Track Speed Skater has won three World Junior Championship titles, grabbed a fourth-place finish at her first Olympic Winter Games and cemented herself among the top 10 female sprinters in the world. 

Following a break of two years due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships are finally back. The World’s top teams gather this week in Hamilton (CAN) to find out who their new champions are.

In less than four seasons as a senior Short Track Speed Skater, Dutch star Xandra Velzeboer has picked up an Olympic gold medal, World Championship gold and bronze, European Championship silver and bronze plus three World Cup golds, two silvers and a bronze. 

British Short Track Speed Skating has been set back by the retirement of its biggest star, Elise Christie, this season – but three brothers are hoping they can put the UK back in the spotlight over the next few years.

As Jordan Pierre-Gilles says himself, “it’s been a hell of a ride so far”. Aged just 23 and in only his third season on the senior circuit, the Short Track Speed Skater is a multiple World Cup Relay winner, an Olympic Relay champion and a favorite for Relay gold in his upcoming home World Championships (starting in Montreal (CAN) on April 8th).

Maria Dolgopolova (UKR) has never been more thankful to be a Short Track Speed Skater. Being on the ice is the only time the Ukrainian can quieten her mind, and even then the peace is fleeting.

Olympic Champions Gabriella Papadakis/Guillaume Cizeron of France danced to their fifth World title on home ice at the 2022 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Montpellier (FRA) on Saturday. Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donohue (USA) took the silver, their fourth consecutive World medal while teammates Madison Chock/Evan Bates collected the bronze, their third World medal.

Two-time Olympic medalist Shoma Uno (JPN) claimed his first World title at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Montpellier (FRA) that continued on Saturday. 2022 Olympic silver medallist Yuma Kagiyama (JPN) took his second consecutive World silver medal while Vincent Zhou (USA) rose from sixth to earn the bronze.

Kaori Sakamoto of Japan struck gold at the at the 2022 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Montpellier (FRA) on Friday, winning with almost 20 points to spare. Belgium’s Loena Hendrickx earned a historic silver medal for Belgium while newcomer Alysa Liu (USA) claimed the bronze in her World Championship debut.
